the
Massage
Bart
offers 2 hour sessions of Traditional Thai Yoga Massage. These sessions
are held on a mat on the floor. As the client remains fully clothed,
loose fitting clothes of a natural
fiber are the things to wear. No oils are being used apart from some
essential oils applied during
the head massage.
During a Thai massage session
the masseur makes use of knees, elbows, feet, hands, thumbs and
fingers. Lots of physical excersises are done, including stretches,
which can be quite intense and will assist the body to relax.
This approach is similar to yoga asanas and as a result the body will
be
able to move more freely. Just as with the practice of yoga asanas, a
lot of work is being done
on
the physical aspect of the body, while the main focus is the energy
body.
It is said that missionary
monks introduced Buddhism in Thailand around the 3rd century BC. Most
likely they also practiced Ayurveda to assist people with dealing
with “dis-eases” and probably adapted
its application to local conditions and available resources. They
offered the people new forms of healing and
spiritual
services, which probably blended with practices already present. The
foundation of the traditional Thai medical system is thought to have
been the teachings of Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, an ayurvedic doctor from
North India, who was the personal physician to the Magadha King
Bimbisara more than 2,500 years ago.
Thai massage is
no longer exclusively Thai nor Asian and the close connection between
Thai massage and buddhist practice is changing. Many good schools and
teachers will still emphasize the development of mindfullness and
loving kindness. More information about schools can be found on the related
links page.
